ADMISSION CRITERIA
 
Target Group 1:  These students must meet the following criteria:
*   Standardized achievement test composite score at the 90th percentile or above OR
*Stanines of 8 or 9 in Reading and Math on the FCAT norm-referenced test or stanines of 8 or 9 in total reading, total language and total mathematics on a comparable standardized norm-referenced achievement test AND
*   Final academic grades of B or above in grades six and seven
*   Successful completion of the following prerequisite courses by the last day of the regular eighth grade school year
   *   At least one year of a foreign language
   *   Algebra I Honors
Neither Algebra I Honors nor foreign langage will be available in summer sessions nor in night school.
 
Target Group 2:  If a student does not meet the required standardized test score or the required academic grades, the admission committee will recommend one of the following:
*   The applicant has the potential for the program and should be placed in Target Group 2.
*   The applicant appears to lack potential and, therefore, does not qualify for the program.
An appeal procedure exists.
 
Admission criteria for grade 10: 
Students making application for grade 10 must meet the following elegibility criteria:
*   Meet all grade 8 eleigibility criteria
*   Be currently enrolled in and successfully complete be the end of grade 9:
   *   Algebra II Honors or Geometry Honors
   *   Foreign language year II or above
   *   Science, preferably Biology, at the honors level
*   Academic grades of B or above
*   Seventh and eighth grade stanines of
   *   Math  - 8 or 9
   *   Reading - 8 or 9
 
If the number of applicants exceeds the number of openings, a random computer selection process is used.

               • Saturday, Jan. 24, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., John Hopkins Middle

               • Monday, Feb. 2, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Dunedin Highland Middle

  • School Discovery Nights – listed on the website
  • Program Guide for magnets, fundamental schools and career academies (available in January at schools and on the website).

Step 2: Find your child’s student I.D. number

If your child does not have a student I.D. number, see shaded box below.

Before applying

If your child is currently enrolled in Pinellas County Schools:

  • Look on your child’s report card
  • Look on your child’s school schedule
  • Call your child’s school

Step 3: Apply using your student I.D. number

Jan. 26-Feb. 16, 2009

  • Call the automated phone system at (727) 501-0871.
  • Enter your program selections from the list of program I.D. numbers. These program I.D. numbers can be found in the Program Guide.

Step 4: Acceptance Period

March 2-13, 2009

  • Call during this period to accept a program invitation, (727) 501-0871.

If your child is not currently enrolled in Pinellas County Schools and does not have a student I.D. number, follow the steps below:

  • Go to a nearby school and ask to get a ParentCONNECTxp password. Bring photo I.D. with you.
  • Jan. 12-Feb. 13, 2009 use the Student Reservation System (SRS) to get a student I.D. number. You’ll need your ParentCONNECTxp password to use the SRS.
  • The SRS system can be found on the community computer at the school or on the home page of the Pinellas County Schools’ website, www.pcsb.org.

  • Jan. 26, 8 a.m.-Feb. 16, 5 p.m. – Application Period
  • Jan. 26-Feb. 12 – Discovery Nights (listed on the district website)
  • Jan. 24 – Information Fair, John Hopkins Middle, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Feb. 2 – Information Fair, Dunedin Highland Middle, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Feb. 13 – Last day to get a student I.D. number to apply
  • March 2-13 – Acceptance Period
