Advanced Placement Test Schedule 2010

Many students and parents express concern about the acceptability of the IB diploma or credits earned in our program. The International Baccalaureate Organization of North America (IBNA) publishes a directory of Recognition Policies of North American Universities which lists over 500 U.S. colleges and universities as well as dozens of Canadian institutions of higher learning.
Below are excerpts from the directory to give you a sense of the value of IB study based upon college credit awarded by various colleges. Note that the rigor of the IB curriculum is not usually compared to traditional programs, but that universities express their appreciation of the program in terms of potential college credits (units) awarded.

FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY

Florida State University recognizes the IB credential and may award up to 30 semester hours for the IB diploma.
This policy is a system-wide policy for our universities.

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

Students who have received the IB Diploma may receive credit and/or placement for subjects completed at the Higher level with grades of 5 or above. Typically, 8 semester hours of credit will be awarded for each Higher level examination meeting the requirements of NYU. (up to 24 credits)

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY

Northwestern Universitys recognition of IB is limited to the award of two units (8 quarter hours) of credit for each score of at least 5 on the Higher level IB examinations. No credit is offered for Standard level work.  (up to 24 credits)

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY

The University of California implements a system-wide policy which awards 8 quarter units for each Higher level examination with a score of 5 or higher.  (up to 24 credits)

UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO

Chicago does award credit for IB work, recognizing that good scores on the Higher level examinations signal college-level proficiency. Students may receive up to a year's worth of credit in a given subject for scores of six or seven on the Higher level exams. Scores of five on the Higher level exams are subject to faculty review. Students who have not earned the IB diploma but who present good scores may also petition for credit. In addition, the University offers a comprehensive array of its own placement examination, which any new student is entitled to sit for in the fall.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI

The University of Miami recognizes the IB as an outstanding college-preparatory programme. The University awards credit for entering students who score 4 or higher (Level H) on selected IB exams.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

The University of Southern California believes that the students who successfully complete the IB programme are far better prepared for the rigors of academic life than students without the IB. USC may base an admissions decision on the successful completion of the IB programme. Typically, USC grants course credit and advanced standing for each IB subject passed at the Higher level with grades of 5 or better, and students may earn a maximum of 18 college units.
