The grading scale for IB examinations is as follows:
7 = excellent
6 = very good
5 = good
4 = satisfactory
3 = mediocre
2 = poor
1 = very poor

In addition, a student may earn up to three additional points for superior performance in Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.

The Diploma will normally be awarded to candidates whose total score reaches or exceeds 24 points and does not contain any of the following conditions:

HIGHER LEVEL SUBJECTS

* a grade 2
* a grade 3 not compensated by a grade 5 in another higher level subject

STANDARD LEVEL SUBJECTS

* a grade 1
* more than one grade 2

OVERALL RESULTS

* more than two Higher Level grade 3 with no Higher Level grade 5, 6 or 7
* more than one grade 3 if there is a grade 2 at Subsidiary Level

Candidates with only one failing condition but with a total score of 28 points including bonus points, will be awarded the Diploma.

EXCLUDING CONDITIONS

The Diploma cannot be awarded, whatever the total score, to candidates who have:

* received a grade of 1 on any Higher Level Subject.
* not submitted an Extended Essay.
* not followed a course in Theory of Knowledge.
* not satisfied the CAS requirements
* effective from the May 2010 examination session, if a diploma candidate is awarded a grade E for Theory of Knowledge OR a grade E for the extended essay, the candidate must achieve 28 points or more to be eligible for the diploma. However, if a candidate is awarded an E for BOTH Theory of Knowledge and the extended essay requirement, the candidate will not qualify for the diploma regardless of the total number of points achieved.

All examinations leading to the IB diploma take place in the spring of the senior year. The examinations are externally set by the IBO International Baccalaureate Organization). In most IB program subjects, however, up to 30% is internally assessed by the school.
